Hi! My husband and I are taking a long weekend trip in March down to Roseburg, Riddle, and Central Point on a family history trip. We are thinking of staying at the Wolf Creek Inn either on the way down to Central Point or on the way back. Is it worth staying at? Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, if we stay there, we are thinking of checking out Golden, which is apparently nearby and a ghost town. Has anyone been there? Is it worth going to? Is it hard to find? We like to explore/see interesting new places/historical places and though it sounded interesting. Any thoughts on this would be great, too. Thanks!
Wolf Creek and Golden....
Both the historic Wolf Crek Inn and the ghost town of Golden are Oregon State Park (OPRD) properties. Go to: www.oregonstateparks.org for factual information on both.
On the personal side, I am quite familiar with Wolf Creek in as it operates from the same administrative region as the parks I manage, Dean, the park manager, has done a fantastic job, both as an innkeeper and an executive chef. I personally think the inn should not be missed. It is an important part of Oregon%26#39;s history as well.
I have yet to visit the town of Golden. OPRD just aquired the property this past summer. From what I understand, there is not much infrastructure remaining, but it is fairly easy to find.

Wolf Creek and Golden....
Hi diekmanj, if you do end up staying there and dine at their restaurant, I would be interested in your opinions on Wolf Creek. We usually stop in Grant%26#39;s Pass or Ashland on our way up to the northern Oregon Coast, but we have been considering a stop at Wolf Creek and Central Point as we have yet to tour the Rogue Creamery which is there also. We did make to Paschal and Abacela in Southern Oregon which are 2 very nice wineries where we enjoyed sampling wine. I would recommend both of these places in this area if you like to wine taste. Have fun! :)
Hi! Thanks for the advice. I think we will go ahead and make a reservation for the Wolf Creek Inn. Syrahgirl, I%26#39;ll try to post something about it afterwards. Dengay, we had checked out the Wolf Creek website beforehand and it looked really nice, but was interested to see if anyone had any personal info or opinions about it-so thank you. It sounds great. We%26#39;ve never stayed in a historic inn before. I can%26#39;t find anything about Golden on the Oregon State Parks page. Maybe I am just missing it or not looking in the right place? We%26#39;ll try to go there if we have the time.
diekmanj,
My bad!! We (OPRD) have had many discussions regarding Golden and including it on our website. I did a baaaaad thing and made the assumption that it had already been included. It has not, and according to my region manager, will not until OPRD decides exactly what they are going to do with it.
Sorry!!

I%26#39;ll look for your report, it looks like they are closed now until Feb. 28 for maintenance, so everything should be in good working order for your March trip to Wolf Creek Inn. We have stayed in many historic properties, I think it adds a lot of education and quaint charm to stay in these kinds of places. I%26#39;ve enjoyed reading about the history of Wolf Creek from their website. :)
Yes, Wolf Creek sounds really interesting. We love history and historic places. We enjoy going to old historic theaters, too. Dengay, is there any particular room we should ask for, other than the suite, which was already bokked when I called them a couple weeks ago? Are any of them (there are 8, I believe) nicer or more charming than others?
About Golden-so what are they (The OPRD) considering doing with it? They only recently bought it. didn%26#39;t they? It looks like (from a website by the Friends of Golden) that there are a few buildings left-a church and a couple others. If we drive over to it, can we look around or is it closed or blocked off? Are we allowed to walk around and look at the remaining structures? IS OPRD considering turning it into an actual State Park, or leaving it mostly the way it is-as like a wayside or historic site?
While I have eaten at Wolf Creek more than a dozen times, I have only spent one night there; four years ago and that was in the Clark Gable Suite. The room was great....nice and comfy mattress and pretty good sized.
RE: Golden; OPRD aquired it this past summer. It will be maintained, in perpetuity, as a state historic site. I am fairly certain that at some point there will be some restoration work that occurs and perhaps some construction, probably along the lines of the recent work that was accomplished at Thompson%26#39;s Mills and Fort Yamhill. A lot will depend on how successful the friends groups is at raising money/awarness and how long it takes for it to rise to the top of OPRD%26#39;s priority list. My guess is more than 5 years, but that%26#39;s only a guess. Whenever the legislator is in session, things can change in a hurry.

dengay, we have yet to go out to Fort Yamhill. I am having trouble booking our reservation for the Wolf Creek Inn... Every time I call, I keep getting the answering machine. I suppose it%26#39;s because the Inn is closed this month. do you know when there is a good time to call the Inn and get a person to reserve a room? Thanks!
I%26#39;ll send a Dean an email and ask him.
~Den~
Thanks! Ah, Mission Successful! I called this morning and got our room reserved. Poor guy (Dean) sounded a bit tired. We going to stay in the Suite-we can%26#39;t wait! The Inn looks so interesting and charming-I%26#39;m sure we won%26#39;t be disappointed.
