Hi you all!! - We planning a thirteen day coast road trip in August with a 3 day visit to or near Portland. Could someone recommend short day trips near Portland? The Columbia River Gorge sounds great, as well as the Multnomah Falls. Any other suggestions? Also, any suggestions on where to stay as a home base? We are not into ';stuffy'; hotels, but prefer places that are off the beaten path and are artsy, funky, and fun. Our last stay, prior to Portland, will be in Bandon....... As an after thought!!!!..... Should we stop on the way from Bandon to Portland instead of three days in Portland? We don%26#39;t want a long drive the night before we catch our plane. P.S. We would like to save Crater Lake for another visit. Thanks from Saythree in Dallas.
Where to stay and what to do for last 3 days of 13 day road?
Hi
A non-stuffy hotel ( Heathman, etc) I think the Inn@Northrup Station would fit the bill of artsy and fun..definitely :)

There are places on the Eastside that I don%26#39;t know anything about so someone else will most likely give you more ideas on that.
I live in Portland so I lean to the side of staying here for 3 days :) and taking that half hour drive to the airport when it is time to leave.
Bandon is about 90 minutes - an hour from Portland...I think.
mistletoe will know that one , I betcha LOL
There are some lovely hotels at the Gorge and the Falls, some of the locals know those better than I also..while waiting for more answers, do a search here and see what comes up, it has been discussed recently I think.
Good luck and Enjoy !!

Bandon- is on the Southern Oregon Coast- it will lprobably take ~6hours to drive from Bandon to Portland. You don%26#39;t really need to stay anywhere between the two-unless you want too.
I don%26#39;t know about hotels to stay at, but some day trips..
You could spend easily a day in Portland and it%26#39;s environs- I%26#39;ll let the PDX experts let you know where to go here.
Don%26#39;t miss the Columbia River Gorge- try to get on the historic highway for a better apprication that the interstate. You could spend a day here doing short hikes, photo ops, etc.
Another Day trip option-
';The Loop'; Going up I-84 to Hood River and then thru the Hood River Valley(%26amp; stop at all the fruit stands, etc) %26amp; continue up to Mt Hood and Timberline Lodge %26amp; back to Portland.
How about taking a day to drive up the coast from Bandon, stopping in Newport or so for lunch then heading over to I-5 for a straight shot to Portland?
As for hotels, even our most stuffy are pretty laid back. Check out The Governor. It%26#39;s centrally located and provide you with easy walking access around the city.
If you must travel during your Portland stay I%26#39;d recommend a morning drive up the Gorge, visiting Multnomah Falls, lunch in Hood River and then a drive back for a nice dinner and play in Portland.
Bandon is only about 4 1/2 hours from Portland. My brother does this exact drive at least once a week.
A fun place just on the east side of the river, but only about 5 mintues from the heart of downtown, is the Kennedy School. It is a McMenamin property, which if you check their website you will see that each place is quite unique and really interesting! I stayed there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Definitely not your run of the mill place! Artsy and funky are exactly what this place is. The website is www.mcmenamins.com.
Ahh, I knew one of our locals would have another idea for funky arsty hotels, the Kennedy Hotel is so great looking and would be a lot of fun..that is if you decide on the Eastside.
syrahgirl , thanks for backing me up on the Inn@Northrup Station, you have to stay there if you ever spend a night in Portland, I bet you would enjoy it.
There are great photos of the hotel on their website that I posted here.
Wait a minute! LOL !
I just re - read some of these replies...
Cannon Beach is 90 minutes from downtown Portland, how slow do you drive or are you walking, to go to Bandon in 6 hours?
Or is that California driving lol
Mtngrl is as usual, right! ;-) Bandon is 4 - 4.5 hours from Portland, taking 101 north to Reedsport, then hwy 38 inland to I-5. You might want to plan for longer though, because the scenery along the Umpqua River. If you go the way syrahgirl is suggesting, plan for the whole day, which may not be such a bad idea if you%26#39;ve not seen that part of the coast.
Hi,
I want to second the Kennedy School if you like funky fun hotels. It%26#39;s owned by the McMenamin%26#39;s, local brewmiesters, who take older properties with character and turn them into cool , fun, interesting bars and hotels.
The Kennedy School is located on the East Side of the river, about a 15 minute drive into the Pearl. However, it is near Alberta and Broadway, both streets with some interesting restaurants and shops.
As for day trips, you should definitely check out Sauvie Island. It is not so much a day trip, as a few hours, as it just north of downtown. Sauvie Island is a beautful serene area along the Columbia filled with u-pick (and they-picked for you) farms. My wife and I love the fresh berries and peaches available during the summer. Bald eagles roost on the island, and it has a great beach and park and pic-nic areas.
Have a great time...
Oh, if your into tax free shopping. The Woodburn Factory Outlet stores are a great place for some retail therapy.
Lucero, brilliant suggestion! I loved Sauvie Island! We went for fruit and flowers during the summer, fields and fields of flowers..my friend takes his dogs there to the beach to swim :)
You guys are too cool!!!! Thank you all with your grreat suggestions. Scarlett01 and Syrahgirl dazzled me with the Inn@Northrup Station...our kind of place. Hope I can help you in the future. I am familiar with our gulf coast and neat places to stay in Mexico, and of course, Dallas. Thanks so much!!!
