It seems that it%26#39;s going to rain a lot next week, unless things change. I would very much appreciate if you could take a look at our itinerary and tell me what you think. How much time should I expect to be on the road realistically, between my itinerary points if it rains?
I still can use some suggestions on what to do and see between stop points. I need to be in Portland by lunch or so on the 9th.
Thanks!
March 3 Driving from the LA%26#39;s South Bay to Santa Rosa. Overnight in Santa Rosa (We%26#39;re skipping the LA -SF part, as we%26#39;ve done it many times)
March 4 Safari West, The Shultz Museum Overnight in Santa Rosa
March 5 Mendocino, Fort Bragg. Overnight in Port Bragg
March 6 Drive to Eureka, through Avenue of the Giants, Overnight in Eureka
March 7 Drive to Gold Beach, go to Redwoods, overnight in Gold Beach (this is a birthday, any special suggestions?)
March 8 Drive to Florence (or?) Overnight
March 9 Drive to Portland
Stupid question: when it rains in those areas ( I am talking about the week of march 4, in particular) - does it usually pour all the time or is it more sporadic? I am not too keen on driving for days in the heavy rain...
Thanks!
Realistic travel time in the rain, need help with itinerary
There is no usually for weather here. Though pour all the time is less usual. still it could happen. we go to coast all times of year, take what we get, then I grew up there, so did wife sort of.

Hmmm...trying to figure out how to answer, it isn%26#39;t s stupid question :) But you%26#39;ll probably have your windsheild wipers on %26#39;regular%26#39; interval swipes if it is the %26#39;useual%26#39; rain event. I hardly use my %26#39;extra fast%26#39; interval swiping when it is raining. Don%26#39;t know if that makes sense or not or even helps. Unfortunetly, It %26#39;s all about the %26#39;pouring%26#39; perspective and the weather system.
I agree with chinookgirl, our wipers are usually on automatic and only wipe when the windsheild is wet enough..we have never put them on the fast speed.
It is nothing like the rains we had in say, Florida or even NY.
Here is can just be steady soft wet, you hardly need an umbrella for a while :)
Hey, you might even get a partly sunny day the first week in March.
Never can tell about spring weather in the Pacific NW. Just bring a raincoat and enjoy. At least you are not likely to get continual downpour like the nor%26#39;easter we hit in Maine for 2 days last June.
You don%26#39;t indicate which way you intend to come to Portland from Florence. I think I would come farther north from Gold Beach and stay in perhaps Yachats or Newport. Many places to visit indoors around Newport and Lincoln City. Take Hwy 18 west toward Portland. Stop at McMinnville and visit Evergreen Aviation and see Howard Hughes Spruce Goose airplane.
If you don%26#39;t like the weather, you can always wait 5 minutes, b/c it%26#39;s bound to change!

Think I would overnight Bandon and Newport, both have a little more to do. Bandon a nice little town, compact. Gold Beach kind of strung along the highway. Newport has aquarium nice bayfront, though Florenc also has bay front but not quite as busy. Though las time we came up coast stayed at Yachats. which is also good choice you can be right on ocean. not much to do there, then watching the oceasn not too bad f thing to do. and walking along it.
Make sure you leave plenty of time to drive the Florence to Yachats stretch, and plan to stop several times north of Sea Lion caves to view Heceta Head LH, Heceta Head, Devils Churn.
Between N Bend and Florence get off 101 to see the Dunes, Dunes overlook n of Reedsport is one. Another is Umpqua LH.
North of Newport/Yachats stop Yaquina Head LH, at Otter Roch to see Devils Punch Bowl and good viewof coast south, then stop at Cape Foulweather for good view from high. stop at Depoe Bay, you might see a whale, plus good to see the ocean churn, find spouting horn Whale covve and boil.er bay also good stops.
And if you have time Evergreen Muiseum in McMinnville is good to see.
As for Cal part, have done Mendocino coast only 2 or 3 times. Have been to Redwoods several times. Mendocino coast a slow drive, but looks like you have planned enough time
Good to see you plan Avenue of Giants, favorite of mine. I can%26#39;t remember which are best places between Eureka and Crescent City. They have changed things since my last visit. We did go to Jebediah Smith SP unit last year and I think others would be better.
Leave time for drive from Brookings to Port Orford, some nice stops there, better than Mendocino coast in my view.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
