Looking for a good place to stay. Coming from Coeur d%26#39;Alene. Which is the best outfitter to do the Cayon cruises.?
Traveling with kids so white water rafting is out.
Thinking of spending time on Wallowa Lake, any recomedations for places to stay, cabins or Lodges?
Heading to Boise from there.
Best Route suggestions welcome.Thanks
Hells Canyon
Not sure, but maybe try an Idaho forum.
Hells Canyon
We did that once up and back from Lewiston area. Can not remember who we went with, but had a good day. Pretty safe for kids, but still need to be supervised
Hells Canyon not real road accessible. except several miles south of Lewiston and near Hells Canyon Dam. There is an access point at mouth of Imnaha R but long lourney to get there
So any flot trips have limited start points. And there is no way I would put any in-experinced person in raft at Hells Canyon Dam. That water rolls over so fast frightening to look at it and lots of volume.
What time of year? From Joseph/Enterprise tou can take Hells Canyon Scenic Bywaysouth towards Halfway then to Snake River and cross at Brownlee Dam into Idaho. If too early that may not work.
For a good expe if you have time I enjoy the drive up the Imnaha Riv from Imnaha, very nice drive in deep canyon country, last gtime I went some was not paved.
Thanks, I wasn%26#39;t sure if the Jet boat tours started from both ends of the canyon or not.
Going in the begining of July. Looking to take 129 to3 then explore over by Joseph and Wallowa Lake Looks real pretty through all of that area.
Thanks again.
Our jet boat turned back at Kirkwood Ranch, which is well into canyon but below the thw more white whater below Hells Canyon Dam.
How old are your kids? , How adventuresome?
Our trip was arranged, 80 or so Froest Service retirees on longer journey. had two boats rented.
Time of year you go means you can get from Joseph over hill towards Halfway, McGraw LO good stop, and better if you have already been in Hells canyon. you get view from top
Don%26#39;t even attempt Hat Point which is best view of canyon unless you have time and 4WD. 10 or so mile 17% grade going in and you have to come out same way. I have done that only twice with more experienced driver than I am. Though many do it. r
The kids range 4 to12. They love to explore but jet boats the only way I%26#39;d experience white water with them.
Glad you mentioned 4x4. We are real careful after going up a logging road turned into service road in Nova Scotia absolutly breathtaking view, but heartstopping return. Had to back down much of the way, won%26#39;t try anything like that again.
Sounds like a good route. Thanks
Seems to be many tour company that do jet boat tours of Hells canyon. Wish I had some feed back especially how good they are with kids. Seems like there is al ot of history in the canyon, would%26#39;nt want to miss out..
';Sonds like a good route'; Hope you did not mean to Hat Point
But route from Joseph towards Halfway though rural is decent much of it pave most two lane, some single lane
No will skip Hat Point. Unless maybe they have horseback riding to the area.
Thanks for your info I really appreciate it.
Will post a trip report when we return.
When we travelled through this area May 2006 we went from Baker City to Richland, Halfway, Oxbow Dam, Brownlee Dam and to Cambridge. From Cambridge we went north towards Grangeville. The route I mentioned from Richland to Cambridge was good paved road all the way, very nice drive also. (Although not nearly as breathtaking as drive from Lewiston to Enterprise!)
We will be going the Lewiston to Joseph route because we want to stay at Wallowa Lake so glad its a nice drive. We keep making the drives longer then they have to be not to miss things. So I %26#39;m glad were not missing anything this part of the journey.
Thanks everyone I welcome the suggestions!
If I could just narrow down the selection of tour companies I%26#39;d be all set.
That route from Lewiston to Enterprise is interesting. You drive along Snake for a short while then head inlanc and climb gently til you reach the Grande Donde Riv Canyon. There you switchback down to the river cross than climb out to even higher point
Be sure to stop at Joseph Canyon Viewpoint, I consider it one of the better views of the depths of the canyons in that country. though McGraw Saddle also quite good south of Joseph..
I enjoy the drive with elevation change you get a lot of other changes including rivers, from dry land, rocky canyons and nice pine forests.
Don%26#39;t count on finding any services after Asotin.
