We are going to be in Oregon for 3 days in September and would like to do a combination of ocean and wine country. So far, we have the following thoughts:
Day 1 - fly into Portland, drive to Cannon Beach and have the afternoon and next morning to explore. Looking at the Stephanie Inn, Ocean Lodge or Ocean Point Inn. Which would you recommend.
Day 2 - morning in Cannon Beach, drive toward Dundee, maybe do a little wine tasting later in the afternoon. How long will it take us to drive from Cannon Beach to Dundee? Is there a scenic route?
Looking at the Black Walnut Inn in Dundee.
Day 3 - all day in Dundee area wine tasting, again stay at the Black Walnut Inn or other area lodging.
Day 4 - drive back to Portland and fly out.
Would appreciate the expert%26#39;s thoughts on whether this is reasonable and whether we are missing anything we absolutely should not miss. Lodging, restaurant and sight recommendations also welcome. Thanks!
3 day itinerary - Cannon Beach and Dundee
Stephanie Inn is very nice, Ocean Lodge is right next door to the Stephanie Inn. There is also a very good restaurant at Stephanie Inn, we dined there when John Newman was the Executive Chef, now Crystal Corbin has taken over since John opened Newman%26#39;s @ 988 in Cannon Beach.
Dundee has several nice place to eat, we have enjoyed lunches at the Dundee Bistro and Tina%26#39;s. In Dayton there is the Joel Palmer House which is heavenly for dinner. Archery Summit, Domaine Drouhin, Torii Mor, Sokol Blosser, Domaine Serene are all very good place to wine taste. We are taking a bottle of Archery Summit Pinot Noir up to our Valentine%26#39;s dinner by the lake, good stuff! Enjoy your trip and Happy Valentine%26#39;s Day! :)
3 day itinerary - Cannon Beach and Dundee
I%26#39;ve stayed at both the Stephanie and the Ocean Lodge and of the two I prefer the Ocean Lodge. The Stephanie is lovely, don%26#39;t get me wrong, but for the price difference, I%26#39;d rather have a more simply furnished but still very nice room and spend the money I saved on a good meal ;-).
I haven%26#39;t been to the Ocean Point Inn yet but it looks from the website like it%26#39;s not right in Cannon Beach. The Stephanie and the Ocean Lodge are just south of town but right near Haystack Rock and you can walk down the beach into town if you like (or drive, of course).
If you don%26#39;t mind taking a little extra time to get to Dundee, I%26#39;d drive south on Rt. 101 and do the Three Capes Scenic Loop on the way (stopping for lunch at the brewpub on the beach in Pacific City), then take Rt. 18 over to the Dundee area.
I agree with northwestwanderer.
As far as Dundee and wine tasting, I am assuming only one of you will be tasting? If both of you are, you should consider hiring a driver. The police have a very heavy presence here (thankfully).
There are so many wineries here. The big touristy ones are listed on the blue tourist signs, like the ones which Syrahgirl mentioned. Try to venture out a bit and you will find some great gems.
What is your style as far as restaurants? Any preferences?
I agree with Northwestwanderer also..I think a lot of the ';draw'; to Stephanie Inn is name dropping, there are some really find places to stay without the hype ( and recent bad reviews I read on a food site about their restaurant)...
As for the wine country, Mtngrl lives near there and has been a huge help to us since we moved to Portland, on finding our way around the area..My husband and I like to be adventurous and not follow the crowd ( at least not All the time lol) so we tend to see those blue signs and know to keep on going.
And it is much more fun to ';discover'; for yourself..you never what some people know about wine too lol
OOps! I forgot to say that The Black Walnut Inn is so beautiful, someone else is posting on the Portland forums right now, he is going to be staying there soon.
Have a great trip and Welcome to Oregon !
Our 23 year old granddaughter came up from San Diego to see her mother. at McChord AFB. They came down and spent a couple of days here. She wanted to see the wine country. So I posted here for ideas. I really am not wine country person.
I got some really good help and got a good four winery trip for the three women. And they were not the ones with the big signs. Well, Rex Hill has a sign I guess. Mistletoe and Mtngrl were two with knowledge. I can remember.
If day 2 is just a driving day, I agree with NWtraveler- go down the 3 capes scenic loop and go back to Dundee via Hwy 6.
Or you might want to try this %26#39;scenic%26#39; route from Cannon Beach to Dundee. Drive back over the coast range on Hwy 26 and then take Hwy 47 to Yamhill and then Hwy 240 over to Dundee. It would be much more plesant than driving all the way back Hwy 26 to Hwy99- traffic wise and scenery wise. I%26#39;d say it would take 2 hours from Cannon Beach to Dundee going this way.
chinookgirl--We occassionaly take this route back home. It is very scenic, but can take longer than 2 hours. Three are some really nice ';backroads'; all around here.
MtnGirl- thanks for keeping me honest- I always seemed to overestimate my time so I estimated this at the short end this time. Maybe I should stop trying to estimate drive time! :)
chinookgirl--I like your idea of 2 hours...anything shorter is good, no? :) Those windy roads...and especially when you add in all the people who are lost or the rv%26#39;s...really adds to the time.
