Southern / Northern Oregon Coast

Hello All,

Planning a trip at the end of April for a few days with

the husband. We%26#39;ve been in the Cannon Beach area

of Oregon, but have never been around Brookings.

Any suggestions as which area to go to at that time

of year? Would do Cannon Beach again, but am

open to options. Thanks.

Southern / Northern Oregon Coast

There are three distinct regions along the coast: North, Central and South. Each has it%26#39;s own uniquness while sharing some similarities. It really depends on what you are looking for in a vacation spot. The north and north-central (Astoria to Newport) are the most populated, for the most part b/c of their proximity to the Portland metro area. This means there are more activities/businesses that cater to vacationers.South of Newport, vacation activity really drops off. That%26#39;s not to say there are not GREAT places to stay, it%26#39;s just too far to travel for many in the Portland area.

Contrary to popular belief, there is not a huge differnece in weather along the coast. I have lived in Astoria, Nehalem/Manzanita, Yachats, Florence and Coos Bay/North Bend over the past 48 years, and while certain events (extremely windy or extremely warm) may be isolated to a section of the coast from time to time, overall the weather is the same. That being said, the best weather is normally from mid-August to mid to late September. April weather, I%26#39;m afraid, can be quite brutal with blustery conditions and cool winds off of the Pacific. Not my favorite weather month on the coast.

For scenic beauty, my top four are, north to south: Cannon Beach to Manzanita; The Three Capes, west and south of Tillamook; Yachats to Florence; Port Orford to the California boarder.

Hope this helps!

What about Newport? It has nice beaches and has quite a bit to do even if it is raining(shops, aquarium, etc). It would be reatively close(~1hr) to Cape Perpetua area which has some nice viewpoints, hiking etc.

We are planning on going the last week of April.

Do you feel the weather would still be pretty bad?

Newport is a place we%26#39;re looking at.

I remember taking my kids there years ago to the Aquarium.

The waterfront around the bridge seemed nice.

Any suggestions for hotels?

Moderately priced with ocean view.

Thanks for your help.

Newport is a nice area of the coast and is fun for kids. They also have the House of Wax Museum that is fun and the Ripley%26#39;s Believe It Or Not attraction. Check out the Hallmark Resort, it is right on the beach, they also have one in Cannon Beach.

We prefer the northern coast, we love the Cannon Beach/Astoria/Seaside area. Astoria is a really fun place to go if you enjoy history. Let me know if you would like more info on this area, or if you%26#39;re pretty set on the Central Coast. We enjoyed a nice dinner at the Blackfish Cafe in Lincoln City last summer after touring the aquarium. Happy New Year! :)

If you don%26#39;t get here very often I would not go back to Cannon Beach. Try something new. It is a long ways to Brookings.

So I suggest Central Coast, where is another matter. Newport has more in-town things to do than other coast towns on central coast. But if you don%26#39;t like town things Yachats would be better. the ocean front hotels in Yyachats closer to beach. Those oceanfront in Newport 88 stairsteps to beach.

I suggest you stop ar Depoe Bay, Cape Foulweather, Otter Rock and Yaquina Head north of Newport. As Den says Yachats to Florence one of the best drives there is. Plan time for plenty of stops. South of Florence you should get out on the Dunes somehow, dune buggie is one way.

If you do think Brookings add the Redwoods

As for weather, we go to beach in April, but then have gone every month, but April is getting a bit better maybe. t

How much time would you schedule for the Newport area?

The area around Newport has more to do and see than probably any other area of the Oregon coast, so you can easily fill ';a few days'; there. I%26#39;d suggest staying in Yachats, and if the budget allows, at Overleaf Lodge. The beachscape is spectacular there; you%26#39;ll be mesmerized just watching the rugged surf.

Dont know if it matters to you, but if you stay in Yachats, you will have to drive to get to a large sandy beach-like the ones at Cannon and Newport. It does have the little bay, but not a large beach to walk on. It is beatiful to watch the waves on the rocks, but I gotta have a big sandy beach to walk on. :)

Actually, there is a 7 mile long sandy beach that begins at the north of Yachats and stretches all the way to the Alsea River (Waldport). If you stay at the Adobe or Overleaf, the trail in front (Historic 804 Trail) will end at this beach, about 1/2 mile away.

I%26#39;ve checked the Adobe Resort and it sounds pretty good.

Anyone stayed there?

It fit the budget better than the other recommendation,

but the other place looks great.
