Low/Moderate Priced Hotels

We will be in Portland this summer and will probably be doing day-trips out of the city as well as roaming around the city as well. The recent posts about the Monaco, et al all sound very nice, but I don%26#39;t need anything quite that nice! Any suggestions for something a bit more basic would be appreciated.

There are many many discussions going on right now about hotels, so as not to repeat myself soooo many times, I will just give you the above list to mull over.

Portland is full of all sorts of hotels for all kinds of budgets.

What exactly are you looking for?

Low/Moderate Priced Hotels

What is your price range and preferred location? That informatiojn will help us help you.

It will just be 2 adults (husband and myself). The criteria is clean and doesn%26#39;t need lots of frills. Breakfast is nice, but not necessary. As for location - I%26#39;m not familiar with the city. Close to some nice restaurants would be great and perhaps an area you can walk around in. We will be heading out for day trips outside the city but would love to get a sense of the neighborhoods in town as well. I noticed some posting about Oxford Suites (price is right - under $125) but not sure about location. Any thoughts?

The Mark Spencer Hotel .. it is a perfect in town location, convenient to streetcar and the Pearl (Powells, Whole Foods etc) and one of the best bargains ( I think) in town.

Look at the Inn@Northrup Station too, they have low rates ..

Never heard of Oxford .. that would worry me, because I hear about hotels all the time :)

Oxford Suites is at Jantzen Beach, which at the far north end of the city just before one crosses the Columbia River into Washington. It%26#39;s approximately 5 miles north of downtown, but a drive time would vary considerably depending on the time of day (a notorious stretch of I-5 for rush-hour traffic snarls). That said, it does not seem like OS would be a good choice for you, despite the price.

Downtown is still a great call, though the negatives will be cost (unless using something like Priceline or negotiating a lower rate with the hotel).

As I%26#39;ve often recommended before, check out McMenamin%26#39;s Kennedy School as an alternative to staying in Portland%26#39;s City Center (it%26#39;s about 10 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes to downtown in a quiet NE Portland primarily residential neighborhood). It%26#39;s a uniquely %26#39;Portland%26#39; hotel in a 90+ year-old elementary school. Besides nice hotel rooms, they have several restaurants/pubs, a movie theater, a soaking pool, etc. inside the property. Read the reviews here on TA or google ';mcmenamins kennedy school';. Rooms run a little over $100/nt. and include use of the pool and free movies. They also have packages which may include: breakfasts, dinners, drinks, etc. for some extra cost

Hope that helps you...

Oh, and Kennedy School is also near some excellent restaurants on NE Alberta Street and NE Fremont. Check out: Alberta Street Oyster Bar %26amp; Grill, Siam Society, Ciao Vito, Tin Shed, among others on Alberta and Fife on NE Fremont... also Autentica (excellent mexican) and Yakuza (fine japanese %26amp; more) within a few blocks on NE 30th/Killingsworth.

Plus for more casual dining, there%26#39;s Cannon%26#39;s Rib Express, Hot Lips Pizza, Concordia Ale House (GREAT beer list!), Bella Faccia Pizza, Thai Noon, Lagniappe (po%26#39;boys and all things N%26#39;Awlins), and (on NE Prescott) a terrific new BBQ joint called ';Podnah%26#39;s Pit';...mmm my mouth is watering...

The Inn at Northrup Station is in a nice location, walking distance to the nice boutiques and cafes in Nob Hill. There is a good place there for pizza, Escape From New York and also Moonstruck Chocolates. Two of our favorite restaurants, Paley%26#39;s Place and Wildwood are just steps away from the Inn at Northrup Station.

Enjoy Portland! :)
